Chitin
Chitin is a polysaccharide made up of monomer, N-Acetyl glucosamine. Chitin is the second most abundant biopolymer in nature after cellulose. Chitin is the main component in the shells of arthropods and in the cell walls of fungus. Chitin and its derivatives (chitosan, glucosamine) have numerous applications in agriculture, biomedicine, paper making, food processing, cosmetics, textiles, treatment of industrial wastes etc. The crustacean waste is the most important chitin source for commercial use due to its high chitin content. |
